3 Difference between load switch and isolating switch

Key Differences Between Load Switch and Isolating Switch

  1. The Type of Current They Can Interrupt.Load switch and Isolating switch
    • Isolating Switch:
An isolating switch lacks an arc-extinguishing device, which means it can only interrupt an unloaded current. It cannot disconnect load currents or short-circuit currents. Therefore, isolating switches can only be operated safely when the circuit has already been de-energized. Attempting to operate it under load may lead to safety hazards.
    • Load Switch:
Equipped with an arc-extinguishing device, a load switch can safely interrupt overload currents and rated load currents, but it cannot interrupt short-circuit currents.
  2. Presence of an Arc-Extinguishing Device
    • Load Switch:
Comes with an arc-extinguishing device to assist in safely breaking and making circuits. This device helps limit the arc and extinguish it effectively, making the load switch safer and more reliable for switching operations. Most modern switching appliances, including those used in residential systems, are equipped with arc-extinguishing devices.
    • Isolating Switch:
Lacks an arc-extinguishing device. This makes it unsuitable for interrupting currents, as it cannot handle the arc generated during switching.

GN19-12 Indoor High-Voltage AC Isolating Switch

  1. Different Roles in Electrical Systems
    • Isolating Switch:
Typically used in high-voltage systems to isolate sections of a circuit. It is installed where de-energization is required for maintenance or inspection, ensuring the safety of personnel working on the circuit. The isolating switch’s primary role is to provide clear separation between live and non-live sections of a circuit.
    • Load Switch:
Used in fixed high-voltage equipment, a load switch can interrupt fault currents and rated currents in high-voltage systems. Its main function is to control and protect high-voltage equipment during normal and overload conditions. Load switches are also applied in low-voltage electrical systems with similar purposes.

Examples of Load Switches and Isolating Switches

  • Load Switch Models: 12kV LBS, 24kV LBS, high-voltage load break switches for RMUs (Ring Main Units).
  • Isolating Switch Models: 12kV and 24kV disconnectors.

Both devices are essential in high-voltage systems, but their specific roles and operational limitations must be carefully considered to ensure safety and functionality.
